Frequently asked questions
FAQs
Anonymity
Can I donate my sperm anonymously?
Yes. Before committing to being a sperm donor, you will be asked to specify what type of donor you want to be - an ID Release or Non-ID Release donor. If you choose to be a Non-ID Release donor, then your details will remain anonymous to the recipient and the child. As an ID-Release donor, you give permission for the donor child or children to be able to contact Creovita to receive identifying information about you once they turn 18 years of age.
What does it mean to be an ID-release donor?
A donor child of an ID release donor is entitled to receive identifying information about their donor. Information about your identity and last known address can be shared, once the child has turned 18 years of age.
Will Creovita tell anyone I am a donor?
No, your identity is protected with us. Nor does your regular medical record state that you are a donor. All contact takes place directly between you and us.
Do I need to tell my partner that I am a sperm donor?
No. It is up to you who you wish to tell.
Becoming a Sperm Donor
Where do I start to become a donor
To begin the process, simply fill in our quick 2 minute form to provide us with some basic information about yourself.
How often can I donate
The guideline is that you can donate every 48 hours from your last ejaculation in order to optimise chances for having a good sperm quality.
How often should I donate
When you qualify as a donor candidate, we encourage you to donate on a frequent basis i.e. at least one time weekly.
Do I need to abstain from sex/masturbation whilst donating?
For most men to optimise the sperm quality an abstinence period of 48 hours is recommended. This is a general guidance and not all require the same time to regenerate sperm cells, but we encourage you not to have sex or masturbate short time before planning to donate.
What tests do I need to do before becoming a donor?
Qualifying to become a sperm donor means having a thorough health check, where our clinical staff will examine both your general health, family health history and conduct laboratory testing for infectious and genetic diseases. You will be guided and counselled about the process as well as about implications of being a sperm donor.
How long can I be a sperm donor for?
We expect you to donate for at least 6 months. There is no maximum period, and it can depend on many parameters, that our staff will explain about during the screening process to become a donor.
How old should you be to be a donor
To be a sperm donor you must be between 18 and 45 years old.
I am an exchange student / foreign national, can I be a donor?
Yes, if you will stay in Denmark for at a minimum a period of 6 months from the time of your application, where you will be able and willing to visit Creovita on a frequent basis.
How many children are allowed to be created using my sperm?
We oversee the number of pregnancies to comply with applicable legislation in various countries. For example, a donor may provide children to no more than 12 families in Denmark.
I am adopted, can I be a donor?
Unfortunately, we cannot accept you on our donor program, if you do not know your biological family’s medical history.
Compensation
Am I compensated for my time?
Yes, at Creovita, you will receive up to DKK 300 for every approved sperm sample. You can visit Creovita to donate 2-3 times weekly.
Is the compensation money taxable?
You receive your compensation anonymously, and you must report your income yourself and tax would be based on your individual circumstances.
Health
What do you screen for in the donor recruitment process?
We test blood and urine for STIs and some of the most serious genetic disorders such as Cystic fibrosis, Hemoglobinopathies (including Alfa thalassemia, Beta thalassemia, Sickle cell), Spinal muscular atrophy, Tay Sachs and Karyotyping.
Can I be a donor if I have had chlamydia?
Yes, if you are treated and cured.
Can I have or get tattoos as a donor?
Yes. We continuously test for STIs, e.g. hepatitis, but a new tattoo requires certain testing and a quarantine period of 6 months while ensuring not infections have occurred.
How often do I need to have tests whilst donating?
There will be a general check-up on your health minimum every 3 months.
Do you have any specific physical requirements e.g. height
Besides good health, no. Our donors represent all kinds of men with different backgrounds.
Are there any conditions that mean I am not able to be a sperm donor?
Yes. Most commonly, the reason is that your sperm count does not meet our criteria. If you do not have an above average sperm count, you cannot be a sperm donor. But there are also several other factors that may disqualify you from being accepted as a sperm donor. You cannot be a sperm donor, if:
- You or someone in your family suffers from serious hereditary diseases
- You are abusing anabolic steroids or drugs
- You have a bleeding disorder or clotting disorder
- You provide sexual services for money or drugs
- You are infected with HIV or hepatitis B or C
- You are or previously have been admitted as a donor at another sperm bank
- You or your parents are adopted or the child of an anonymous sperm donor and thus do not have full knowledge of your biological origin
Legal
Am I legally responsible for the child created with my sperm?
As a sperm donor, you have no paternal or legal obligations to any children that result from your donations. The same goes for the children, who cannot make legal demands on you as their donor either.
Can the donor children track me down?
A donor child of an ID release donor is entitled to receive identifying information about their donor from the age of 18. You are not obliged legally to respond, but as an ID Release donor you have agree to be contacted, why it is expected that you will respond if a donor child wishes to make contact. A donor child of a non-ID release doesn’t have the right to receive identifying information about their donor. Given modern technologies such as DNA testing and social medias, Creovita cannot guarantee that a donor child will not try to reach out to you.
Can I be a donor if I already have children?
Yes, having children of your own means that you will know how great a gift you will be helping other parents to receive by making it possible for them to have a child. Also, it is a good indicator of good sperm quality.
Do I need to donate in the sperm bank or can I do it from home?
You will need to come into our sperm bank to donate the sperm so that we can ensure that it is processed properly and it is donated by you to ensure full traceability.
