What is understood by good quality sperm?

As you might expect there are a number of medical and practical requirements needed in order to be a donor. At Creovita, we accept sperm donor applications from men with a healthy lifestyle, are aged between 18 - 45 years old and don't have any serious hereditary diseases themselves or in their family. Besides that, you must have a good sperm quality.

It often works best if a donor lives or works in Copenhagen- if not, it might be hard for you to organise regular visits to the sperm bank to donate your sperm.

Sperm quality is defined as the ability of the sperm cells to fertilise an egg. To determine this we look at:

- Density: The number of living sperm cells

- Motility: The mobility of the sperm cells

- Morphology: The appearance of the cells

- Volume: The amount of semen in the sample

We will tell you after your sperm samples what your levels are and how you compare to the base criteria levels.

How will we test your sperm?

As part of your application process, you will provide us with two sperm samples. From these, we will examine sperm quality. We will analyse the sperm under a microscope to determine sperm count per millimetre, the number of moving sperm that move, the degree of movement and the sperm sample’s total amount in millilitres.

We will also need to test that your sperm can survive being frozen as this is how it will be stored before being used. Unfortunately some men’s sperm doesn’t cope well with freezing and thawing and they therefore cannot become sperm donors. If your sperm remains good after being frozen it can be used as donor sperm.

Situations in which you cannot become a sperm donor:

- you have been a sperm donor at e.g. another sperm bank or clinic

- you have haemophilia or a coagulation disease

- you have provided sex to others for money or drugs

- you inject medicines for non-medical reasons

- you or your family have a serious inherited disorder – but please get in touch to talk through any specific disorder with us

- you yourself are a donor child – as we won’t know your full genetic family history

- you are adopted – as we won’t know your full genetic family history

If you have had one of the below, you will need to wait for 6 months before donating sperm:

- you have had a new tattoo or piercing

- you went traveling to specific countries

- you had sex with a person who is presumed to have an HIV infection or a hepatitis B or hepatitis C infection (contagious hepatitis)

- you have venereal warts or condylomatas
